Weekly Roundup: PETA Accuses Hermès & More
Welcome to another edition of Baghunter’s weekly roundup! This is your chance to catch up on what’s been happening at Baghunter HQ, gain insights into the latest trends, and find the latest news from the ultra-handbag industry.
PETA Makes Misleading Claims against Hermes
You may have seen the video of the ostrich farm in South Africa doing the rounds on social media and on international websites. The video, obtained by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), shows ostriches being kept in poor conditions before they are taken into an abattoir to be killed. PETA have suggested that the skin from these birds are used for Hermes Birkin bags, which Hermes have vehemently denied.
Hermes have been quoted in the Daily Mail as saying “Contrary to what the video broadcast by the association suggests, the farms shown in the videos do not belong to Hermes. Hermes operates at a secondary level within this industry and the small quantities of ostrich leather used by Hermes does not come from farms but tanneries which…are subject to permanent and stringent controls.”
This is not the first time PETA have falsely accused Hermes of sourcing their exotic skins from factory-farmed and cruelly slaughtered animals. Last year, PETA accused Hermes of sourcing crocodile skins from farms where the animals were kept in poor conditions. The accusations even led to a rumor that Jane Birkin was considering removing her name from the iconic Birkin bag.
However, after an investigation these accusations were also found to be false with Hermes reiterating their compliance of “good practices for farming, procedures for slaughter, environmental management, social conditions of employees, and the security of work conditions and infrastructures.” Jane Birkin also reiterated her happiness in her association with Hermes.
Regardless of the latest accusations by PETA, Hermes ostrich bags remain as popular as ever. In fact, this week we sold a stunning Hermes Kelly 32 Tri-Color Ostrich Limited Edition bag to a client who told us that ostrich is her favorite exotic skin. The wonderful bamboo, taupe, and vert Veronese bag in pristine condition was snapped up only days after we had consigned it, and for a bargain $35,500! We are hoping to consign a few more ostrich skin bags in the near future due to their popularity so keep an eye on our newest finds!
